Felipe Landa Jocano, was a Filipino anthropologist, educator, and author. He was widely recognized as “the country’s foremost cultural anthropologist.” He also published quite a few books that talked about various aspects of Filipino Society and Culture.
Jocano identified Filipino Value System into two.
TWO MODELS OF FILIPINO VALUE SYSTEM
Exogenous Model
Also known as Foreign Model described to be “legal and formal”
Inherited by Filipinos from Western culture particularly from the Spaniards and Americans. (Americans on the right, Spaniards left)
Bureaucracy is an example of a Foreign Model
Indigenous Model
Described as “traditional and formal” guide that is embedded deeply in the subconscious of the Filipinos.
Based on literature’s made by experts and researchers, in relation to Filipino social values of Filipino core values along with the Filipino character of Filipino identity the value system is found to possess inherent key elements.
Surface Values
They are seen and observed values exhibited by majority of Filipinos and considered as branches from the single origin- the actual Core Value of the Filipinos- Kapwa (togetherness) refers to the community not doing things alone.
The Surface Value spin of the Core Value through a predecessor or the Pivotal Aspect of Pakikiramdam or shared inner perception. “Feeling for another”
Utang na Loob- Gratitude
Hiya- Dignity
Pakikisama– Companionship
